Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of entry passages down to the facility... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows British leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among a great many British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our way of life, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the US military carried out what it described as a "massive strike" against IS targets in the country, following an attack killed two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
