At least 11 of the weather balloons, carrying thousands of packs of black-market cigarettes, have since been recovered

Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.

Aviation Problems

The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.

Law Enforcement Actions

Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.

Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.

Cross-Border Contraband Trend

Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."

So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.

Regional Consequences

Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.

Smuggling Techniques

Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."

Security Service Goals

Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."

Regional Security Context

These airspace violations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.

Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
