The megacity Rises to Toxic Smog After Festival of Lights

As Tuesday dawned inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with breathing severely hazardous air that registered in the "critical" category.

Extremely High Pollution Readings

Several parts of the city recorded an air quality index exceeding 500, which represents 10x the safe threshold established by the global health authority.

In some locations, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of 1,800, amounting to fifteen to twenty times higher than safe limits.

Pyrotechnics Prohibition and Recent Policy Shifts

Since 2020, authorities had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during the Festival of Lights due to their substantial impact to the hazardous pollution that blankets the city as colder weather begins.

Yet recently, the current regional leadership appealed to the supreme court to seek a easing of the prohibition.

Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – which have been questioned by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a middle ground between "heritage and ecological concerns".

Legal Verdict and Reality

To the disappointment of environmental and health campaigners, judicial authorities complied with the appeal, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during specific hours throughout the festival.

On Monday night, there was widespread disregard of the designated hours across the capital, with little enforcement regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the more environmentally friendly version.

Numerous air quality sensors throughout the capital recorded air quality peaking around late evening to some of the worst levels recorded during Diwali in at least recent memory.

Cross-Border Effects

The widespread use of fireworks during Diwali also initiated a dispute with neighbouring Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab partly blaming worsening pollution levels in Lahore on contaminants coming from across the border following the celebrations.

Chronic Environmental Problem

Extremely elevated readings of atmospheric toxins in the capital have persisted as a major issue for more than 15 years, with the problem continuing to worsen.

Near the festival period, the levels of toxic particulate matter in the air has been observed to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the peak records ever recorded in Beijing, which was once regarded as the globally most contaminated city.

Multiple Contamination Sources

This crisis in the city is attributed to a combination of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, construction debris, construction activities, garbage fires and smoke from farm burning in neighbouring regions of neighboring agricultural zones.

Within these states, agricultural workers illegally burn crop residue to prepare for next season, producing toxic pollution that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as winter air sets in.

Health and Economic Impact

Both financial and medical consequences on the approximately 33 million people living in the capital region is enormous, according to various investigations.

These hazardous conditions leads to high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing disorders, and can potentially cause malignancies.

The pollution is calculated to be accounting for approximately 10k untimely mortalities per year in the capital.
