View the Director's The Odyssey Preview in a Manner It Wasn't Meant for Viewing.
Christopher Nolan's legendary action saga, The Odyssey, is a film audiences have been anticipating ever since it was revealed. It easily ranks as one of the most awaited motion pictures coming next year. As a pre-Christmas treat, a trailer has finally arrived, even if it's compromised by YouTube's poor compression—perhaps explaining why Nolan initially kept the preview exclusive to cinemas.
The Initial Look at the Legendary Cast
The debut footage reveals Matt Damon in the role of the king of Ithaca. We also see Tom Holland as Telemachus and Anne Hathaway as Penelope. In a poignant moment, Penelope asks Odysseus to promise he will return, to which he respond by asking what occurs should he fail. The trailer also offers a quick, obscured look at Polyphemus the Cyclops, whose flock Odysseus and his crew steal on their treacherous voyage.
Based upon a foundational pillar of Western literature, The Odyssey follows the lengthy quest undertaken by the famed ruler. After his triumph at Troy, which is depicted within the companion epic, the king faces an extended and hazardous return to his homeland.
Legendary Obstacles and a Star-Studded Lineup
Along his path, the hero encounters numerous obstacles and legendary creatures. These include the witch-goddess Circe, who transforms men into swine, and the deceptive Sirens. Regardless of these ordeals, his sworn oath is to do whatever it takes to get back to Penelope and Telemachus on his home island.
The adaptation's cast is remarkably star-studded. Joining Damon, Holland, and Hathaway is Charlize Theron portraying the shrewd goddess, together with Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, Elliot Page, and Jon Bernthal.
A Tale of Many Adaptations
Homer's epic has seen many reinterpretations throughout history. Examples include contemporary versions to a 1999 ballet. There has even been a stage musical adaptation called Epic: The Musical, presented as a nine-album collection.
The official trailer was long awaited following the project's reveal and a brief teaser which was initially shown exclusively in theaters. That teaser subsequently found its way onto the internet shortly thereafter.

The Odyssey will debut in IMAX theaters worldwide on July 17, 2026.
